You’re overly simplifying things. That there is a far-right racist consipiracy theory surrounding ‘cultural Marxism’ doesn’t mean that there isn’t some truth to the whole ‘postmodern neo-Marxist’ story, independent of that conspiracy theory.

I agree that some conservatives blame everything on ‘cultural Marxism’, which is inappropriate. Things like gay marriage and trans rights are simply social liberalism. Climate action is simply common sense. Things like high immigration is simply the result of capitalism.

However, neither liberalism nor capitalism nor common sense explains the rise of no-platforming, extreme forms of identity politics, celebration of victim mentality, the denounciation of Western civilization, the repeated re-examintion of Western history to highlight colonial guilt, and the erosion of support for classical liberal norms like free speech. These are all the result of the popularization of ideas that are Marxian at their root, i.e. not actually from Marx himself but inspired by his worldview of history being driven by class conflict. These Marxian ideas can be found under the banners of critical theory, the conflict theory of sociology, and to some extent, postmodernism.

I say this as someone who helped fight for gay marriage, who supported Obama and other liberal politicians, and who is certainly not racist at all. But I am extremely concerned that Marxian ideas are eclipsing liberal ideas on the Left.
