The opposite of authoritarian is indeed libertarian, e.g.

authoritarian - banning gay marriage

libertarian - allowing gay marriage

authoritarian - abortion bans

libertarian - legal abortion

A democratic society might still ban gay marriage and abortion if the majority agrees to it. In fact, I fear this might soon become the reality in some parts of America.
