The counter-narrative is rooted in empirical science, accepts the 'gender landscape' as it naturally occurs, and focuses on the pragmatic question of how society can undertake reasonable reforms to make life better for trans people. I strongly believe that it is much more effective in advancing trans rights than the queer theory narrative.
By the way, TERFs don't disconnect science from philosophy. Rather, they base their whole views on a particular form of critical theory (hence the name 'gender critical'), and only 'borrows' from a simplified version of science when convenient. TERFism is hence entirely driven by philosophy and ideology, just like queer theory.
