Perhaps it's a 'degree' thing: I think the tone of social justice politics became too negtive around 2015-16, and we have been paying the price of the backlash ever since. The election of Trump was the first sign of the backlash, which just shows how swiftly the backlash came. Following quickly was the backlash to trans rights in America and Britain. I don't think we can just let the backlash continue like this.
What I wish for is a return to the culture of social justice politics of an earlier era. More positivity, less negativity. This doesn't mean we don't criticize media representation ever. It just needs to be more balanced.
You are correct that the reactionary right is going to want to recruit people anyway. What we don't want to do is to give them an advantage here. I think a small tilt in the overall perception of things can make a big difference here.
