Liberalism might be old, but we don't need to go beyond if there is no evidence we need to. In fact, given the seriousness of the consequences, I think we shouldn't go beyond unless there is clear evidence we need to. And there isn't.
A persistent problem with the Left is their belief that bad ideas only arise because of bad material conditions. While I agree that improving people's material conditions is important, there is no reason why the ideas of the illiberal right won't keep going even when material conditions have improved. I mean, material conditions have improved a lot in the past 100 years, yet the bad ideas still persist.
