I support a compromise solution, where 1) even if self identification is part of the criteria for legal recognition, it needs to be backed up by evidence to prevent abuse by bad actors (e.g. proof of living in the gender role for 2 years or a doctor's letter); 2) even where there is legal recognition of gender identity, it does not override the ability to retain single-sex spaces, where anatomy is clearly relevant. This should end the controversies around e.g. women's pools.
