I identify as a liberal, and I am against identity politics. Liberals believe in individual equality of opportunity and equality under the law. This could include ensuring disadvantaged minorities get a level playing field. However, it must be on an individual basis, and use methods which actually treat all individuals equally. For example, it could be liberal to have anti-discrimination laws, which state that individuals can't be discriminated in employment based on protected characteristics. However, it is certainly not liberal to have laws to specifically help a race or gender at the expense of others because it is a 'disadvantaged class'.

Liberals are not leftists, in the proper sense of the word. Leftism is based on class (group) analyses, not individual liberty. Both old school socialists and the new identity politics people are leftists, but two very different types. They are sometimes referred to as 'old left' and 'new left'. The old left (socialists) divide people into economic classes, but the new left (identity politics) divide people into pseudo-classes based on race, gender, etc.
